Gimme Shelter Review
Gimme Shelter, a film written and directed by Ron Krauss is about 16 year old Apple, played by Vanessa Hudgens who grew up in a troubled environment and is struggling to find her place. In this movie, Apple has grown up bouncing from foster home, to shelter, and back to her drug addicted mother. To most people’s surprise, Apple is pregnant, and she runs away from her mother to find shelter with her dad. Once her father finds out she is pregnant, he makes her an appointment to get an abortion. Apple says no and runs away again. This movie is the story of Apples journey and how she gets back on her feet by finding God and meeting people who truly care for her and want to help her and her baby. This movie really inspires you to never give up. Apple had many chances to just give up, or get an abortion and move on with her life, but she kept fighting. She went through so much in this movie, and she fought hard get her life back on track.
The movie begins with Apple (Hudgens) cutting her hair in the bathroom, and then finally standing up to her mother and saying “i’m done, i’m getting out of here.” She runs out into a taxi with her mother screaming at her and calling her horrific names. Apple(Hudgens) goes to her fathers(Brendan Fraser) house seeking a home, but him and his new wife (Stephanie Szostak) are on edge about letting her stay. Once they find out she is pregnant, they don’t think she is capable of taking care of a child, so in order for her to stay, they say she must get an abortion. Apple(Hudgens) refuses and runs again. She struggles on her own, and is hospitalized after a terrible car accident. While in the hospital she meets Father McCarthy (James Earl Jones) who tells her about a shelter for young pregnant women. At first Apple is hesitant about going to the shelter, but after seeing her mother again she decides to give the shelter a chance. While at the shelter, she meets some of the best friends she keeps for the rest of her life. She didn’t know if she could trust some of the girls at first, but after getting to know them, she knows she can trust them. One day at brunch with the girls, Apple’s water breaks and she goes into labor. She gives birth to a beautiful girl and names her Hope. After the birth, she reconnects with her father to work out their differences. Apple’s father(Fraser) then proposed that she should come live with him and his family. She agrees, but after saying goodbye to the girls at the shelter, she
realizes that her true home is at the shelter with them. Apple(Hudgens) returns and raised Hope with her true family.
Gimme Shelter is based on the true events of Apple’s life. This movie really portrays the theme of hope. Apple struggled her whole life with an addict of a mother, physical and mental abuse, no father figure, and much more no one should ever go through. Apple could have given up at any point in her life. She didn’t have to go through all of it, she could have ended her pain, but she didn’t, she kept fighting. The first major sign of hope in the movie is when she meets Fr. McCarthy. After getting into a car accident, Apple is hospitalized for a few days, while there she meets the priest who tells her about the shelter for young pregnant teens. This is her sign that there is a place for her to go and turn her life around. The next sign of hope is the jacket Apple finds at the shelter. On one of her first nights there, Apple and some other girls go to the basement of the shelter to look at all the clothing. Apple goes off on her own and finds a perfect fitting jacket. This symbolizes hope because her whole life she had struggled with finding shelter and that feeling of safety. After finding the jacket, Apple truly knows she has made the right decision, and that she is safe now. The last symbol of hope is her baby. Apple actually named her child Hope because she knows that this was her hope. She struggled in the beginning, but she now knows that there is hope for everyone including her.
I personally think Gimme Shelter is a very inspirational story. I think the director did an amazing job with portraying this girls life as a movie. I will say that this was very difficult to watch though, because I can not imagine how Apple must have felt going through so much trauma. This movie really shows us that no matter what we are going through, God always has a plan for us. I really loved how the director added the part about abortion because you finally see her making a choice that she knows is the right choice. She knew that her baby was going to change her life, she just needed to hold on to faith. Apple is a true fighter, and I think that we can all learn from her.
Gimme Shelter was a very depressing yet hopeful story of Apple’s life. The story hits some pretty deep topics, but it is good that we can watch this and see what other people go through. This movie teaches us that God is always looking out for you no matter what. Apple had her doubts in the movie and I don’t blame her, she went through some horrific things at such a young age. God never gave up on her though, just like He will never give up on us. My conclusion on the movie is that Apple is a fighter. She never gave up no matter how hard things
got, she kept on fighting. It just shows that if you hold on to your faith and give it all to God everything will be fine. The movie reminds me of my favorite bible verse: 1 Peter 5:7, “cast all your anxiety on Him, for He cares for you”. This is exactly what Apple did, she gave it all to God and everything worked out. In conclusion Gimme Shelter is an amazing movie that I think everyone needs to watch.
